Jungle Geometry
These shape-shifting mokuhanga prints were made while I was living in Tokyo, a sprawling metropolis that is densely layered, infinitely complex and, for a newcomer, deeply disorienting. I struggled to navigate its web of streets and alleys by scanning its foreign landscape, searching for familiar patterns and forms to help me understand where I was. Sometimes I’d suddenly realize I wasn't where I thought, and for a brief, disorienting moment — I was nowhere. These works explore this hardwired need to search for patterns in our surroundings, and the profound exhilaration of being lost.
これらの形を変えるフォームは、私が東京で過ごした時間を反映しています。東京は、密集した階層構造を持ち、限りなく複雑で、新参者にとっては非常に混乱を招く広大な大都市です。私はこの異国の風景を眺めながら、自分がどこにいるのかを理解するのに役立つ見慣れたパターンや形を探しながら、網の目のように張り巡らされた通りや路地を進んでいきます。時には、自分が思っていた場所ではないことに突然気づき、一瞬、どこにもいないことに気づきます。これらの木版画は、私たちの周囲にパターンを探すという、生まれつき備わっている欲求と、迷子になったときの深い高揚感を表現しています。.
