The Parameters of Our Cage

The Parameters of Our Cage is a record of ongoing correspondence between photographer Alec Soth, and C. Fausto Cabrera, a writer and artist that is also an inmate of the Minnesota Correctional Facility. The deeply moving, far reaching conversation between the two ranges from Andre 3000 to Robert Frank to BLM and the broken US prison system.

It’s a powerful reminder of the power of art and creativity. It’s also a reminder to appreciate what we have, and to spend some time thinking about what we would want with us or already have in our “cages.” Furthermore, it made me think about how our environments shape who we are, and where we end up. The photo of Fausto, standing in the front yard of his childhood home with his hand in the air, his face obscured by shadow and haze, broke my heart.

It’s almost like he didn’t stand a chance. I really feel for that little kid.

All proceeds from this book will be donated to the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop.
