The space is currently set up to enable and empower creative collaborations, and like its past life as the neighborhood market, is a place for people to come together. The studio is approximately 1000 square feet with hardwood floors, 10 foot ceilings, and according to a friend that sees things a little differently, is inhabited by a bunch of ghostly souls in old clothing, just going about their business. The space offers a diverse range of lighting options -- from diffused north facing window light to complete blackout with strobes or constant sources. It's a versatile creative space that has been used to shoot portraits, products, videos, interviews, and was even used to hypnotize several Olympic athletes before the London 2012 games. Other amenities include a full Profoto lighting package, plenty of parking, strong coffee, and a two-block walk to the restaurants and shops of Pearl Street and downtown Boulder. Having more time to look changes how we see. I wanted to slow down. Using alpine touring skis, a small backpack, a folding medium format camera and twelve rolls of black-and-white film with ten exposures per roll, I set out to traverse and photograph a high route across the Alps. Each piece of equipment for this trip was chosen for its simplicity as well as its limitations -- and for the extra time, attention, and patience it requires. Traveling up and over mountains by skis has a way of shifting time away from something that is measured in minutes, hours, and days. Ascending one step at a time through untracked snow, the units become ski lengths, pole plants, breaths, sips of water, bites of food, daydreams, changes in weather or light. The physical limitations of low-speed film in a mechanical camera call for a heightened attention to composition, exposure, and technique. Every frame becomes its own unique experience -- one that builds gradually with each precise movement of the camera, each small adjustment for focus, aperture, or shutter speed. Once I've settled on an image, I take a deep breath and try to be as still as possible. High in the Swiss Alps, in the space between the breath and the click of the shutter, time slows to a stop. These 14 images were made over the course of 8 days, and selected from a total of 120 images, where just one exposure was allowed for each image. They have been minimally altered from their original form in order to stay true to the tonality of the film, and are the pure, unfiltered, timeless compositions that I'd been looking for. I was fifteen, and photography was exciting, but it was also technically complex and counterintuitive. Twenty-five years and hundreds of thousands of images later, I've developed a way of seeing that's based on intuition and trust. I try to be as honest as possible with how an image makes me feel as I'm looking through my camera. Sometimes the concept, color, tone, and composition just aren't working, and I'll do what I can to correct them. Other times, though, I sense an immediate harmony, a satisfying rightness that I may not be able to explain, even to myself -- I just know. The photographer Julius Shulman referred to these moments as "visual acoustics," and sometimes they make me laugh out loud. Not because they're funny, but because I'm so elated by the thought that they surround us everywhere, all the time. After a few days there I started to understand what he meant. China is a country of 1.4 billion people, whose economy is expanding at ten percent each year. The centuries-old infrastructure -- both physical and social -- is being torn down and rebuilt at a rate as staggering as the quantity of resources being consumed in the process. China is the factory of the world. Its people work around the clock to make products for the rest of us, and they are paying a massive price for doing so.   While the flat yellow haze that hung over Beijing provided beautifully soft, filtered light for photography, each toxic lungful was a disturbing reminder of the countless material objects that have been made, bought, and discarded. Yes, this trip changed my life. I now worry for the people of China, and I worry about our planet and its ability to withstand our abuse. Their singular purpose is "to make good men better." However, the Masonic culture is in decline, and its dwindling membership is now burdened with large, aging buildings that are expensive to maintain. The order's long standing shroud of secrecy has led many outsiders to see it as a cult performing strange rituals behind closed doors. As a result, the Freemasons are struggling to recruit the next generation of members. Freemasonry, along with its simpler, more personal, more connected way of living, is on the brink of extinction.
