Rémy Julienne, 1930-2021

After seeing an old Isuzu commercial, I followed the trail which led me to Rémy Julienne. He was the stunt coordinator for the Isuzu spot, and also a legend in the field of vehicular stunt work. Motorcycles, cars, boats, trucks, for almost 50 years, he was the go to guy.

He worked on a bunch of Bond films, including 1989’s License to Kill, where he coordinated an insane chase scene with a bunch of tanker trucks. One of them actually drives along on 3 wheels while tilted at 45 degrees, then does a wheelie. For real.

What’s especially mind-blowing about his work is that it was all done before digital effects. It was a time that required a different level of precision — stunt work was a craft rooted in the laws of physics, fine motor skills, and impeccable preparation.

Ironically, after surviving a lifetime of death defying stunt work, Rémy succumbed to Covid in January of this year.
